Bellevue Quantum Hybrid Eco-Responsible Data Center

Exaion and PINQ² are revolutionizing the data center industry with an avant-garde data center in the heart of a Quebec heritage jewel: the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Family in Sherbrooke. This project, carried out for Humano District, transforms the gymnasium of the historic building into an innovative “digital boiler”, where waste heat from the servers is converted into heating for the surrounding homes.

This center stands out as the world’s first eco-responsible quantum hybrid and sovereign data center, marking a decisive step towards a sustainable digital future for Quebec.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS PROJECT

Helps meet the specific needs of our customers

Built for the specificities of HPC systems with more than 5,000 vCPUs, more than 200 GPUs and PINQ quantum systems. The Bellevue data center demonstrates Exaion's expertise in the construction, security and deployment of data centers to support our clients' most demanding use cases on blockchain, AI, digital twins, quantum and digital simulation.

Is a true gem of technology that combines classical and quantum computing.

Bellevue is the world's first eco-responsible and decentralized data center designed for quantum hybridization. Imagine a space that accommodates both a supercomputer for industrial experimentation, the first French quantum computer (Quandela) installed in North America and the first quantum key distribution test bench for cryptography development in Canada.

Is a model of commitment to digital decarbonization

This project illustrates Exaion's commitment to eco-responsibility through the recovery of waste heat in order to heat the main building of the former convent. This data center is unique in that it combines air and immersion cooling technologies.

The hot air released by the servers is directly treated by an adiabatic system which uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as a working fluid to recover residual heat. This makes it possible to pass thermal energy from one fluid to another, and therefore to redirect the waste heat towards the local water loop. The immersion technique is an innovative technique involving the servers being immersed in a tank containing a non-conductive, non-toxic and monophasic liquid. Heat from the liquid is transferred to water through a heat exchanger. The hot water is reinjected into the building's local water loop.

Contributes to the rehabilitation of historic buildings

Exaion chose this atypical location, the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Family, to develop the first eco-responsible data center project. To clearly demonstrate that urban data centers can be integrated into living spaces on a human scale. The infrastructure and design make this data center an ultra-efficient and eco-responsible model that generates real added value for local stakeholders.

Promotes the protection of data and industrial secrets: a priority

The Bellevue data center is also a model in terms of security. It is protected by multiple layers of security to prevent unauthorized access to your information. We use secure perimeter defense systems, comprehensive camera coverage, biometric authentication and 24/7 surveillance against intrusions. In addition, we apply a strict access and security policy in our data centers and ensure that all staff are trained in security.

Democratize HPC, Quantum and Quantum Hybrid solutions with the Center of Excellence in Quantum Hybrid Software Engineering

The PINQ2 and Exaion partnership allows the democratization of the digital innovation laboratory, promoting collaboration between industry, academia (University of Sherbrooke), and the training of tomorrow's talents. This unique value proposition in Quebec makes us attractive internationally by offering HPC, quantum and hybrid quantum computing aligned with industrial software and security standards as well as a simple and fluid user experience.

PINQ² and Exaion are setting up a multidisciplinary team to accelerate the development of quantum business solutions through the Center of Excellence in Hybrid Quantum Software Engineering. The CoE allows the pooling of resources and knowledge from key partnerships, democratizing quantum using, as much as possible, current software engineering standards. As the first Center of Excellence in hybrid quantum software engineering, it aims to accelerate the adoption of HPC and quantum technologies by democratizing access to PINQ² infrastructure for our companies and researchers.

Allows Quebec and Canadian businesses to be ready for the future

INNOVATIONS RELATED TO THIS PROJECT

Here are the key points of this remarkable merger:

Technological innovations :
  • Installation of cutting-edge equipment, including PINQ²'s HPC and Quantum infrastructure and the first Quantum computer from Quandela in North America.
  • Secure integration of quantum and HPC systems for the development of hybrid solutions.
  • Establishing new standards in quantum hybrid software engineering.
  • Creation of a test bench for the cryptography of quantum networks.
  • Positioning of Bellevue as a reference infrastructure in DistriQ, Sherbrooke's Quantum Innovation Zone.
Data Security:
  • Multiple layers of protection, including sophisticated perimeter defense systems, ensuring uncompromised data security.
 Eco-responsible Innovations
  • Using over 99 % of renewable energy and integrating advanced cooling technologies to optimize heat recovery.
  • Hydronic system and heat pumps ensuring efficient heat exchange and a constant supply of heating and hot water.
  • Each residential unit connected to the energy loop benefits from its own heat pump, increasing the energy independence and comfort of the occupants.

The Bellevue data center is therefore much more than a technological infrastructure; it is a model of commitment for an eco-responsible digital future and a leader in the development of innovative solutions for sustainable housing.

ITS INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

This data center is an extraordinary project that houses cutting-edge equipment, including innovative technologies in security, cooling and high-performance computing and quantum dedicated to industrial innovation in Quebec. The innovative aspects of the project are:

  • Bellevue is the very first eco-responsible and decentralized data center designed specifically for quantum hybridization in the world. The ability for a company to connect in the same security context to an HPC and quantum platform in order to develop quantum hybrid solutions – the first in the world.
  • The development in the CoE of a hybrid quantum machine learning (HQML) AI anomaly detection solution for open source fraud detection – first in the world.
  • In the Quebec context, where electricity is inexpensive and the majority of homes are heated by electric baseboards, this project opens another path and demonstrates the technical and economic feasibility of such a project.
  • Reuse of waste heat to heat the convent.
  • The deployment of this data center in the HUMANO District project makes it possible to use more than 50% of the center's waste heat.
  • Replicability of the energy loop model with other real estate partners. Promote the development of energy loops, in particular the recovery of thermal waste, fatal energy in the IT industry but also other industries.
  • Promote the development of eco-responsible rental housing.
